Sde Bar (Youth Ranch for Boys) and Ginat Eden (Youth Farm for Girls)
In Israel, there are literally thousands of Jewish young people for whom there is no framework called “nuclear family” which nurtures them and provides the opportunity to develop a normative life in society. They wander from one educational institution to another until they are no longer part of any facility. They wander from shelter to shelter until the streets are their home. Many of them end up in punitive settings of one kind of another.
Many remedies have been established; few, if any, with significant success. Sde Bar and Ginat Eden are amazing exceptions to that rule.
The teenagers, many of whom are brought to Sde Bar in handcuffs upon order of the court system and girls who are literally rescued from the streets of Jerualem, slowly learn to appreciate the give-and-take of interpersonal relationships.
For the first time, they experience the nurturing, loving expectations that others have of them born of a belief in their capabilities and potential. They work tending crops, raising animals and participating in their education for the first time.
Sde Bar is located in The Judean Desert just south of Jerusalem and near the small community of Nokdim. Ginat Eden is located in The Jordan Valley adjacent to the small community of Mevo'ot Yericho. Both are recognized by The Ministry of Education and of Social Services and receive backing from these governmental offices, but not enough to cover the cost of lodging, food and activities.
